Get your ‘Civil War Rivalry’ and ‘Frosty’ books Saturday

The 128th renewal of the Civil War Rivalry will take place Saturday at 12:30 p.m. When Oregon State and Oregon square off in a tackle football game at Reser Stadium — the earliest meeting ever between the Beavers and Ducks.
The teams will play again next year in Eugene, another early-season encounter in a series that historically has almost always been staged at the end of a regular season.

Over the years, there have been unforgettable moments and great games. Many of them are caught in my book, “Civil War Rivalry — Oregon vs. Oregon State Football,” which covers most of the in-state competition between the schools that began in 1893.
With that in mind, I will be at a book signing from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the lobby of the CH2M Hill OSU Alumni Center across the street from Reser with my last 20 copies of the book in tow. I will be there with Frosty Comer, former president of “Our Beaver Nation,” and we will also have copies of the book I wrote with him, “Frosty is No Snowman,” for purchase.

The book tells the story of Comer’s life and career as a hospital pharmacist, military man, entrepreneur and avid supporter of Beaver athletics. It’s a motivational tale of a man who came from humble beginnings to help establish one of the state of Oregon’s most successful businesses, Cook Solutions Group, over the past two decades.

In “Civil War Rivalry,” I cover many of the highlights of the series that has lasted more than a century. I interviewed more than 250 people — evenly divided between Ducks and Beavers, with a handful of Platypuses thrown in — and got perspective from players, coaches, athletic department officials and representatives, some of whom are no longer with us.

Among those interviewed were Terry Baker, Mel Renfro, Mike Hass, Phil Knight, Rich Brooks, Mike Riley, Chip Kelly, Dennis Erickson, Josh Wilcox, Bill “Earthquake” Enyart, Dan Fouts, Brandin Cooks, Joey Harrington, Steve Preece, Bob Berry, Matt Moore, Kenjon Barner, Ken Simonton and Pat Kilkenny.

You want stories? You want color? You want tradition? You want history? This is your Civil War game bible, with 527 pages of the aforementioned. It may be your final opportunity to get a signed copy.

Hope to see you there.
